The Center for Photographic Art is pleased to announce a reception to celebrate the release of its book PhotoFocus 2009: Elkhorn Slough. This book is the culmination of PhotoFocus, the Center’s youth outreach program. PhotoFocus, in its third year, is a free photography program for high school students from Monterey County.
This year the PhotoFocus students documented the Elkhorn Slough in a book which highlights the importance of the wetland. The process included learning from guest scientists about the Slough. Students honed their photographic skills with photographic mentors, and edited their images into a book. Over 5 days this summer, students learned about documentary and editorial photography, composition, portraiture, digital editing, artistic collaboration and book-making.
The book represents the unique photographic vision of each student’s experience at Elkhorn Slough. Its main objective is to draw attention to the beauty of and threats to the Slough. Proceeds from book sales will benefit preservation of Elkhorn Slough.
The program was taught by Greg Mettler, a local photographer, and MPC and Cabrillo College instructor. Students attending represented 9 Monterey County public and private high schools, and were chosen by their art teachers.
Books will be available at the reception. The artists will be in attendance to sign books.
