Doug Steakley

Douglas Steakley is a widely recognized photographer from Carmel Valley,
California. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University and
was a jewelry designer and gallery owner for many years. His interest in travel led
him to pursue photography and in 1993, he became a full time photographer. His
distinct images range from the Monterey Peninsula where he lives, to many
international destinations where he enjoys traveling.
Two large format books featuring his color photography have been published:
Pacific Light, Images of The Monterey Peninsula, in 2000, and Big Sur and Beyond,
The Legacy of The Big Sur Land Trust, in 2001. Pacific Light won an Honorable
Mention from the National Outdoor Book Awards in 2001. A third book, A Photographer’s Guide To The California Coast, was published in 2005, by
Countryman Press. Doug is currently working on a fourth book—A Photography
Guide To Big Sur, which will also be published by Countryman Press.
Doug supports and works closely with several land conservation groups and a
variety of his images have been published in their annual reports and a variety of
other publications. He has worked with The Big Sur Land Trust, The Nature
Conservancy, The Land Trust Alliance, The Trust For Public Land, The Wilderness
Coalition, and The Tuolumne River Trust. In 2003, he received the Ansel Adams
Award from The Sierra Club for his conservation photography.
Images by Doug have appeared in national and international magazines including
Outside, Backpacker, Architectural Digest, Town and Country, Art and Antiques
and many others. His photographs have been used in numerous calendars, greeting
cards, post cards and posters.
Doug leads many photography workshops and tours both locally and
internationally and is currently an online instructor with BetterPhoto.com.
